DIY NatureScape
Urban environments often abandon spaces between the time of the demolition and construction of the new. An example of this is in the Upper Mounts area, Northampton where the Chronical and Echo offices used to stand. This area has been devoid of anything but rubble since May 2014 and this proposal aims to create temporary interactive spaces for creative and social use by the local community. Kinetic design, sensory gardens and water features all contribute to making a successful multifunctional urban garden and with the incorporation with Biophilic design, it promotes an eco-friendly atmosphere; making cities a much healthier place to live in. The idea can be rolled across many of the different empty spaces in the city and can apply to any city. Although events will depend on the size of the space and season, all will endorse the same ethos of the education and benefits of urban nature. By featuring things thought to be missing from area such as an ice rink and amphitheatre, it will encourage interest in the instalment. The space will be seasonal where the meadows in the summer will blossom but in the winter, will be flooded in order to create an ice rink. The portable orchard will also be a feature where children and adults can learn about gardening whilst helping the environment at the same time. The scheme will be funded by the local council, university and/or the royal horticultural society as it promotes healthy living and community and helps bring people together in an interesting way.
